Katas for Street Fighter: the Roleplaying Game

The following is a rough, to the point description of katas that can be used in Street Fighter: the Roleplaying Game. Each kata may be used a maximum of once per day unless otherwise specified. Only one kata can be prepared at a time. You must have a number of dots in the Rites background equal to or greater then the kata's rank in order to learn and use it. Each one is purchased with experience at a formula of 4x rank. Stats (including techniques) can be pushed to a maximum of 8 through the use of katas.

Rank One:

Focused Fighting [weapon kata]
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Duration: 20 minutes

This kata only affects weapon techniques. You must have at least two weapon techniques with one dot of skill in order to learn and use this kata. Drop one dot in a weapon skill of your choice and increase another by the same amount. These adjustments last for the duration of the kata.

Seize the Day
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Duration: 20 minutes

For the duration of this kata lose one die of damage on all your attacks.You gain one additonal point of speed on all your actions for the duration.

Strike of Ferocity [Punch]

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

Your Punch technique temporarily increases by 1 dot while your Grab technique temporarily drops by 1 dot. You must have at least one rank in Grab to use this kata. This bonus does not apply to learning new maneuvers. The effects last until the duration expires or you attempt 10 punch actions.

Strike of Fortitude [Block]

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

Your Block technique temporarily increases by 1 dot while your Kick technique temporarily drops by 1 dot. You must have at least one rank in Kick to use this kata. This bonus does not apply to learning new maneuvers. The effects last until the duration expires or you attempt 10 block actions.

Strike of Grace [Focus]

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

Your Focus technique temporarily increases by 1 dot while your Athletics technique temporarily drops by 1 dot. You must have at least one rank in Athletics to use this kata. This bonus does not apply to learning new maneuvers. The effects last until the duration expires or you attempt 10 focus actions.

Strike of Storms [Athletics]

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

Your Athletics technique temporarily increases by 1 dot while your Punch technique temporarily drops by 1 dot. You must have at least one rank in Punch to use this kata. This bonus does not apply to learning new maneuver. The effects last until the duration expires or you attempt 10 athletics actions.

Strike of Thunder [Kick]

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

Your Kick technique temporarily increases by 1 dot while your Focus technique temporarily drops by 1 dot. You must have at least one rank in Focus to use this kata. This bonus does not apply to learning new maneuver. The effects last until the duration expires or you attempt 10 kick actions.

Rank Two:

Avalanche

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 45 minutes

This kata drains 2 Willpower when activated and thereafter remains active for the next three rounds. During that time, for each successive attack after the first, reduce the difficulty to hit you by 1 and increase your damage ratings by 1. This is cumulative.

Boundless Senses

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Duration: 45 minutes

During the preparation time make a Focus + Meditation roll. For each success on this roll you form a mental image of the area around you starting with the first fifty feet and increasing by twenty feet per success beyond the first. You see everyone in the area, even those hidden by stealth or special maneuvers, as misty humanoid figures colored by the Hado. This replaces your normal vision (if you had any).

Crisis Fury

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Duration: 45 minutes

When you are reduced to 5 health or less all maneuvers you perform have +2 speed but –2 damage. If you are rendered unconscious the kata ends.

Dark Bargain
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Duration: 3 minutes

After being prepared this kata remains inactive for up to three hours. It is activated by paying 1 Willpower. Once activated your life begins being devoured by your Hado. Each round you suffer an unpreventable health level of damage. This damage may be healed and can prove lethal if left unchecked. For each point of damage you suffer because of this you recover a point of Chi. This may temporarily put you past your maximum Chi but the excess points are lost within the hour if not used.

Elemental Flow

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

During the duration increase the speed of one type of elemental attack by 1 at the cost of losing 1 soak against all other elemental attacks.

Elemental Shell

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

During the duration increase your soak total by 2 against all elemental sources at the cost of losing 2 points of speed and damage on your own elemental abilities.

Mind's Eye

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 180 minutes

By meditating upon your inner harmony you gain for the duration of this kata a -1 to difficulty of all rolls involving clarity of thought but +1 to the difficulty of anything invoking anger or which requires stirring your fighting spirit. You cannot use maneuvers or school abilities to regain Willpower until the kata ends.

On Bended Knee
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Duration: 180 minutes

In order to prepare this kata you must be in the company of your master or at least three other servants of the same master who also know this kata and prepare it alongside you. You may only have one master and cannot follow the commands of another. For the duration of this kata, for as long as you continue to obey your master, you gain a pool of bonus dice equal to three times the difference between your permanent Willpower and your master's. Once spent, these dice are gone. Each round you may add dice from the pool to any action up to a total limit equal to your school rank.

Sight beyond Sight

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 60 minutes

Pay one 1 Chi, 1 Willpower during preparation. All Insight rolls are difficulty 5 but the focus this requires makes your reactions slower so that your aborts and conjunction maneuvers have a –1 speed penalty.

The Storm's Howl

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 60 minutes

When 10s appear on your damage rolls you may pay 1 Willpower and explode one die an additional time beyond the first. For the duration of this kata you cannot regain Chi in any way.

Thunder Dragon's Touch

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 60 minutes

This slow kata of rhythmic movements stirs up an immovable portion of your soul. For the duration you are immune to fear and hypnosis but you are unable to use any psychic attacks yourself.

Touch of Scorn

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 15 minutes

Each attack you make against a target brings out horrible memories forcing them into a contest of Chi with you. If they fail they lose a point of temporary Willpower. If reduced to zero Willpower they must make a Willpower check or frenzy. For the duration of this kata you must focus on one opponent at a time without heed to other threats, concerns, or problems.

Whistling Wind [weapon kata]
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Duration: 30 minutes

To use this kata you must be dual weilding. To gain it's benefits you can only use weapon strikes. On the first round following successful strikes with both weapons the speed of successive strikes is increased by 1. If both strikes are successful on a following round the damage increases by 1. If you are dizzied or knocked unconscious these bonuses are lost and their accumulation must begin again.

Rank Three:

Brother in Arms

Prep Time: 45 minutes

Duration: 180 minutes

In order to prepare this kata you must work with at least one teammate for the full preparation time. They do not need to know this kata. For the duration you may pay 1 Willpower once per round as a free action to refresh the durations and other attributes of team abilities but for the following two rounds you cannot benefit from any such abilities yourself.

Flow Like Water

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Duration: 45 minutes

When a maneuver damages you make a Perception + Insight roll, difficulty 7, against their technique score. If successful that technique has –2 penalties to speed and damage against you for the next three rounds. If you opponent dizzies you with such a penalized technique you remain stunned for two full rounds and cannot pre-emptively break out of it.

Fortification

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Duration: 60 minutes

During the preparation time you strike a hard surface again and again to force yourself to feel pain and contemplate it’s effect on your body. For the duration you may pay 1 Willpower as a free action to negate all damage resulting from striking another. If you run out of Willpower this kata ends.

Graceful Bound

Prep Time: 60 minutes

Duration: special

Make a Meditation + Focus roll during the preparation time. If successful regain two points of either Chi or Willpower. This may only be used a number of times per day equal to your highest school rank –1, minimum 1.

Harmony of Wind and Fire [weapon kata]

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 180 minutes

This kata requires a Wind and Fire Wheel. While active you have two additional chi per wheel used in the kata for wind, fire, and water elemental abilities. You must be touching the weapon to use this store. At the kata’s end you suffer 3 levels of bashing damage per point remaining as the energy discharges.

Raging Bull

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 180 minutes

For the duration of this kata all your maneuvers must move a full hex or you automatically fail in using them. Being hit by projectiles cannot stop you while you are performing dashing maneuvers regardless of how much damage they dizzy you by. Your soak against projectiles while dashing is increased by 3. This is not armor or a stamina bonus. Balrog has this kata.

Scythe Leg
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Duration: 20 minutes

You must already know Strike of Thunder to learn and use this kata. It functions exactly like Strike of Thunder except that multi-hit maneuvers only consume one kick action each for the technique's duration.

Strike Mastery
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Duration: 30 minutes

To learn and use this kata you must first have at least one Strike of XXX kata. If you prepare this kata you may choose to, instead of the Strike's normal effects, drop the listed technique by two dots to increase the other by the same amount.)

Test of Honor

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 30 minutes

This kata remains inactive for up to 3 hours until you pay 1 Willpower to use it the first time. Then the duration begins ticking down. On the first round it is activated you must invoke the effect without moving or taking any aggressive action. If you do this you force a target of your choosing within line of sight into a contest of permanent Honor with yourself. If you fail you lose three temporary Honor and the kata continues. If they fail they cannot take any action against you for that round.

In subsequent rounds you may attempt further Tests of Honor. Once per round, until the duration expires, you may make a total number of tests equal to your permanent Honor + school rank. If you fail any tests you cannot gain Honor in any way for the next 24 hours. You must continue to take no aggressive actions in the rounds you wish to invoke this kata.

Vengeful Focus

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

When interrupted mid-attack your action cannot be halted by a dizzy. You cannot block while this kata is active.

The Way of Soul

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 45 minutes

Roll base Focus. This roll can be re-tried by paying 1 Willpower and spending an additional ten minutes prepping the kata. Successes negate points of defensive Focus maneuvers shielding your opponents for the duration. During this time all of your maneuvers have a –1 speed penalty.

Rank Four:

Blow of the Requiem

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 35 minutes

You may pay 1 Willpower to force one opponent per round into a contest of Focus + Insight. If you win this contest you may pay temporary Honor to add an equal number of dice to your next damage roll. This addition cannot exceed the excess successes scored. During the duration of this kata and for the next 48 hours you cannot gain Honor in any way.

Gift of Soul
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Duration: 45 minutes

You must prepare this kata alongside another teammate. They do not need to know this kata (although if they do they may prepare and use it at the same time). At the end of the preparation time make a base Focus roll against a difficulty equal to 3 + the total power point cost of the team ability you wish to be the focus of this kata. For the purposes of determining this difficulty add the base power cost to that of an advanced technique, if applicable. If the difficulty rises above 9 additional points roll over into required successes. If this roll succeeds the other teammate has the benefit of the team ability for the kata's duration. This does not work with the Shield of Honor line. This kata can only be used once per day regardless of other abilities.

For example fighter A wants to confer on fighter B Advanced Firm Resolution using this kata. The two fighters spar for a little while and practice to prepare the kata. At the end of the half hour fighter A makes a Focus roll at difficulty 9 (3 base + 4 for Firm Resolution + 4 for Advanced Firm Resolution = 11 and the two points over 9 roll over to required successes). Succeeding on this difficult check fighter A gives fighter B the benefits of Advanaced Firm Resolution for the next 45 minutes.

Indomitable Will

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 30 minutes

During the duration of this kata you cannot regain Chi or Willpower in any way although you may spend it normally. At the end of the kata’s preparation time make a Stamina + Rites roll, difficulty 5. For each success you will remain conscious for two health levels in aggravated or incapacitating damage when you would normally be rendered unconscious. When the duration ends, if you have any such damage, you lose consciousness for the next half hour.

Hand of Honor

Prep Time: 45 minutes

Duration: 20 minutes

While this kata is in force you exude an aura of confidence as a living paragon of virtue. On each roll you make for the duration you may re-roll a single die, as long as it is not a 1, which is lower then your permanent Honor. While you have this aura anything that causes you to lose Honor is more traumatic to you resulting in three times what the Honor loss would have been. This can put you at negative ranks of Honor.

Hungering Force

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 60 minutes

When using energy projectile attacks you must pay an additional Chi while this kata is active. Your blasts lose no strength when they come into contact with others mid-flight.

Stand Against the Heavens

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 45 minutes

After being prepared this kata remains inert until activated or the duration expires. You pay 1 Chi to activate the effect and an additional Chi per turn to maintain it. Once active you cannot use Focus maneuvers yourself. All Focus maneuvers used against you must roll all damage and contested rolls twice and use the lower result.

Rank Five:

The Indomitable Mountain

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 60 minutes

For the duration of this kata when you are reduced to one health level above incapacitated you may pay 1 Willpower and 1 Chi to make a base Stamina roll negating damage equal to successes. This may interrupt an attack and the use of Willpower and Chi in this way is not limited by your Focus technique. If you run out of either the kata’s effect ends immediately.

Paragon
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Duration: 90 minutes

You must already know either the Test of Honor or Hand of Honor katas. At the end of the preparation time pay 2 Chi and make a roll using your permanent Honor, difficulty 8. For the duration of this kata add successes on the Honor roll to your soak totals to soak attacks made by anyone with less permanent Honor then yourself (those with equal or greater Honor are unaffected). This is neither armor nor a stamina bonus. For the duration all Honor losses are tripled.

Pulling Fangs

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Duration: 90 minutes

While this kata is in effect you are unharmed and unhindered by mind-altering techniques that rely on negative emotions. This includes bonuses from Psycho Force, Psychokinetic Channeling, and psychic attacks. Likewise you cannot use any such maneuvers yourself. If your temporary Willpower ever drops to zero this kata ends immediately.

The Face of Despair
Prep Time: 75 minutes
Duration: 180 minutes

In order to learn and use this kata you must know the Psychic Assault Focus maneuver and have at least three dots of the Psycho Force background. At the beginning of any round you may opt to pay 1 Chi. If you do so everyone within 100' of you must make an immediate Chi roll at a difficulty equal to your Manipulation + Intimidation. Those who fail begin to succumb to inner sorrows - losing a die off of all their actions for as long as they remain within the area of effect.

This penalty is cumulative and can reduce an opponent to an empty dice pool. Anyone who gathers a negative modifier greater then their permanent Willpower must make an immediate Chi roll. Failure on this roll means that character can do nothing but wallow in guilt and sadness. Temporary Willpower can be spent to delay the onset or to temporarily act although the full penalty still applies down to a minimum of one die for that character's pool.

While this kata is in effect the user cannot show mercy, compassion, or kindness. In fact they are incapable of even feeling positive emotions (and anything that forces them to do so ends this kata immediately).

Veil of Light

Prep Time: 60 minutes

Duration: 180 minutes

Preparing this kata requires the expenditure of 2 Chi and 2 Willpower. For it’s duration, whenever you are attacked you may make a base Focus roll, difficulty 7. Two successes are needed. If successful the energy of that maneuver is dissipated harmlessly through the veil which is now attuned to that particular fighter. Once the veil has been attuned to one person it cannot be changed. Additional attempts to use that same maneuver against you are automatically thwarted until the kata ends. Once used you cannot prepare this kata again until a full seven days have passed.

Welfont of Chaos

Prep Time: 45 minutes

Duration: 180 minutes

While this ability is in use the speed and damage of all maneuvers that do not use Psycho Energy are penalized by 2. Conversely the speed and damage of Psycho-driven maneuvers are increased by 1.
